Manufacturing ESG Compliance: Which Grant to Use

Learn which Singapore government grants can help your manufacturing facility meet ESG compliance, achieve sustainability certifications, and reduce environmental impact.

Verified 30 January 2026

Scenario: Transition to sustainable manufacturing with ESG compliance measures, green certifications, and environmental impact reduction

The Scenario

You manage a manufacturing facility in Singapore—whether producing electronics, chemicals, textiles, metals, or other products. Your business faces increasing pressure to improve ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) performance:

  • Customers want certified sustainable suppliers
  • Industry bodies recommend green certifications
  • Operating costs are rising due to energy consumption
  • You want to reduce carbon footprint and waste

You’re considering investments in:

  • Energy-efficient machinery and lighting
  • Waste management and recycling systems
  • Renewable energy installation (solar, etc.)
  • Green certifications and compliance audits
  • Process optimization for sustainability

The question: Which government grant should fund these ESG improvements?

Choose EEG If…

  • Primary focus is energy reduction and cost savings
  • You’re installing certified energy-efficient equipment
  • You need faster approval (8-12 weeks typical)
  • Project budget is under S$50,000 (efficiency is better value)
  • You want the highest co-funding percentage (70%)

Examples:

  • Replacing old manufacturing equipment with ISO 50001 certified machinery
  • Installing LED lighting system throughout facility with smart controls
  • Upgrading to VFD (variable frequency drives) on compressors and motors
  • Installing solar panels for onsite energy generation

Choose EDG If…

  • You’re implementing a comprehensive ESG transformation
  • Project includes multiple ESG pillars (energy + waste + emissions)
  • You need strategic consulting and planning
  • You’re pursuing major certifications (ISO 14001, B Corp, etc.)
  • Budget is higher (S$50,000+)

Examples:

  • Full facility ESG audit → energy upgrades → waste management system → green certification
  • Implementing circular economy principles with equipment changes and process optimization
  • Achieving ISO 14001 environmental management certification with consulting support
  • Net-zero roadmap with multiple investment phases

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

For EEG (Energy Efficiency)

  1. Conduct energy audit (optional but recommended)

    • Identify major energy consumers
    • Calculate potential savings
    • Identify suitable equipment
  2. Get quotations from equipment suppliers

    • Request at least 3 quotes for items >S$3,000
    • Ensure equipment has energy efficiency certifications
  3. Prepare for BGP application with:

    • Energy audit report (if done)
    • Equipment specifications with energy ratings
    • Cost quotations
    • Baseline energy consumption data
  4. Apply via Business Grants Portal (BGP)

    • Submit application with all documentation
    • Answer energy efficiency questions
  5. Get pre-approval (Letter of Offer)

    • Typically 8-12 weeks for decision
    • Do NOT purchase before LOO
  6. Procure and install

    • Work with approved suppliers
    • Keep all invoices and installation records
  7. Claim grant

    • Submit completion certificate
    • Provide proof of payment
    • Submit post-installation energy data (to show savings)

For EDG (ESG Transformation)

  1. Develop ESG strategy document (2-5 pages)

    • Current state: energy, waste, emissions, certifications
    • Target state: ESG goals and targets
    • Implementation roadmap with phases
    • Investment requirements
  2. Engage ESG consultant (highly recommended)

    • Request SOW for gap analysis and improvement plan
    • Include certifications sought (ISO 14001, etc.)
    • Timeline and milestones
  3. Prepare detailed project proposal including:

    • Business case for ESG transformation
    • Detailed scope and implementation plan
    • List of equipment/services to be procured
    • Detailed cost breakdown (equipment, consulting, training, certification)
    • Expected outcomes (cost savings, emissions reduction, certifications)
  4. Apply via BGP with:

    • Complete project proposal
    • Consultant engagement letter and SOW
    • Detailed budget with supporting quotes
    • Company financials
  5. Pre-approval phase (8-16 weeks)

    • BGP may request clarifications
    • Consultant may need to revise proposal
    • Allow time for revisions and resubmission
  6. Implementation after LOO

    • Execute consulting engagement
    • Procure equipment
    • Install and commission
    • Track progress against milestones
  7. Claims and certification

    • Submit progress reports to BGP
    • Provide evidence of spending
    • Get final certifications (ISO 14001, etc.)
    • Submit final claims

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting work or purchasing before Letter of Offer (LOO)

  • Both EEG and EDG require pre-approval

  • Work done before LOO is not eligible

  • Wait for LOO before any spending

  • Mixing energy efficiency and ESG transformation in one EEG application

  • EEG focuses specifically on energy savings

  • If you want broader ESG improvements, use EDG

  • Each grant has different documentation requirements

  • Not getting energy audit before applying

  • Energy audit significantly strengthens EEG applications

  • Shows you’ve done homework

  • Helps calculate ROI and payback period

  • Underestimating EDG timeline

  • EDG approval is slower (12-16 weeks vs 8-12 for EEG)

  • Plan 3-6 months ahead, not 2 weeks

  • Engaging consultant adds time but strengthens application

  • Engaging wrong consultant

  • Make sure consultant understands your industry

  • Verify they have ESG/manufacturing expertise

  • Check references from other manufacturing clients
